SEEC Southern England Consortium for Credit Accumulation and Transfer

Staff Development Seminar

Reflections on Credit Practice
(A seminar to launch the publication of the report of the qualitative
investigation following the 1999 SEEC survey into credit practice in
England, Wales and Northern Ireland.)

Wednesday 17 January 2001

10.00 to 15.45

London Voluntary Sector Resource Centre
356 Holloway Road
London, N7 6PA

(Close to Holloway Road Tube)

Background

In 1999 SEEC undertook a questionnaire survey of credit practice in Higher
Education, the findings of which were published in 'Credit Practice: A
Comparative Approach 1994-1999' earlier this year. The responses to this
survey indicated a number of unresolved issues in the practice of credit and
a second survey was undertaken. The second survey took the form of
unstructured interviews that explored the reality of credit practice in a
sample of institutions drawn from the original survey. The institutions
were chosen to reflect a variety of approaches.

The survey is based on face-to-face interviews drawing on two perspectives:
that of academic staff using credit and that of central staff involved with
regulations.

The Seminar

The seminar will be led by the authors of the report, Anita Walsh, CATS
Co-ordinator at Kingston University (also currently Chair of SEEC) and
Professor Bob Johnson of Johnson Associates, formerly Head of AP(E)L at
Thames Valley University.

The seminar has been conceived, not only as an opportunity to present the
findings of the survey, (a copy of Reflections on Credit Practice will be
available to every participant) but as an ideal opportunity to look ahead at
credit principles and practice in the context of the National Qualifications
Framework.

The seminar will be of value both to staff involved with regulations (e.g.
those in departments such as Registry, Academic Office, Quality Centres etc)
and to teaching staff with a responsibility for, or an interest in, credit
issues. It will therefore interest both experienced practitioners and
those relatively new to credit.
The emphasis of the seminar will be on participation. Delegates will have
the opportunity to share experiences and debate outstanding issues through
the two 90 minute workshops, each led by one of the authors or an
experienced practitioner.
