A Karl Carlile posting:
Bill: This is doubtful to say the least. Some struggles or demands are clearly
consistent with the capitalist system. That doesn't make them any less worthy, in fact
some of these demands are probably more urgent. In fact I would go so far as to say
they are necessary steps before socialism can be even materially possible
Karl: No struggles of the working class are today consistent with the capitalist
system. All working class struggles constitute an anithesis to capitalism which means
that they contain an inherent dialectical dynamic that is revolutionary. However many
of the struggles of the working class are formed in such a way as to modify their
revolutionary dynamic thereby subordinating them to the interests of capitalism. It is
this reactionary exercise, which is performed by the current reactionary leadership of
the working class. that invests them with the appearance of being "consistent" with
capital.
It is not a questions of whether workers' struggles are any less worthy". To view such
struggle in this form is to seek to limit struggle and adopt a passive orientation
towards struggle --it is to erroneously percieive struggle as spectacle. The correct
perception of struggle, on the other hand, entails the conception of struggle in the
context of its inherent revolutionary dynamic. This entails rendering, explicit
conceptually and politically, the character of that struggle. To achieve this the
correct method of struggle must be rendered explicit together with corresponding
demands and slogans. This is why all working class struggles must be conceived in the
context of the struggle for communism. To conceive them otherwise is to "artificially"
bifurcate them from the struggle for communism, to subordinate to the interests of
capitalism.
