Dear Colleague,
The April 14 PKESG seminar at Manchester Met. was a great success. Over
30 economists came to the seminar--many of the regulars as well as some
new faces. The papers were well-received and prompted many questions.
I found John McCombie paper on production particularly interesting
because it confirmed my heretical views that neoclassical production
functions are just nonsense. John is willing to send you a copy of his
paper upon request--his e-mail is [log in to unmask] Geoff Harcourt
could not present his paper; but I was able to get Julio Lopez-Gallardo to
take his place. Julio teaches at the Universidad National Autonoma de
Mexico; he was also taught by Kalecki. He gave a paper on "Budget Deficit
and Full Employment". If you would like a copy of his paper, he would be
happy to send you one: his e-mail is [log in to unmask] Andrew
Mearman and Peter Clarke's paper on teaching economics generated extensive
discussion. If you would like to see why, read the paper--I have attached
a copy of it. If you can not read the attachment, you can e-mail Andrew
at [log in to unmask] and request a copy. The roundtable discussion on
teaching heterodox economics was very interesting. Alfredo Saad Filho
gave some very interesting comments which I hope he will write up and
circulate. About 15 of use went to a nearby Irish pub chosen by Bruce
Phlip and had some drinks and then 12 of use went to an Indian restaurant
for dinner where economic and non-economic discussion filled the air. All
in all it was a very successful day. We should thank Bruce for arranging
the seminar--signs were well-posted so nobody got lost trying to fine the
room; and the tea/coffee etc. was excellent.
This was the last PKESG seminar for the academic year. However we are in
the process of setting up the seminars for next year--see the call for
papers below. Please think about giving a paper.
Sincerely,
Fred Lee
