Thanks to all for their elucidations of what, primarily, is a point of
ettiquette. And in that light, let me apologize for my part in this group
offense against current sensibility. Which (is it only I who thinks so?)
appears, with the new century, to have become more sensitive; apologising
is becoming a daily event for me. (Of course, there's a corollary, to wit,
that I am becoming increasingly insensitive. A good thing, then, that,
given my years, I am about ready for the broom.
But I can understand the objections. When my time comes, if my old buddy
George Bowering manages to get ahold of a 45 of Doris Day singing "Secret
Love" and tips it into the casket as it slides into the furnace, I trust he
won't tell anyone until a decent interval has passed. Although, knowing
George, he will likely be too proud of his gesture, to hush it the fuck up.
[pardon the relatively minor obscenity.... In fact, please quote it!].
And then, given he spends a lot of time in bed with the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation.......Oh, and I warn you, he won't want this
gesture questioned, even though Teresa Brewer singing "Into Each Life, Some
Rain Must Fall" would be far more appropriate.
And what is a decent interval, in such matters? I think the List would
appreciate learning this from those who mention one; we'd like to know when
to begin legitimate comment.
