So we fight like starving dogs over whatever yellowing bone is flung in our
general direction. At least Seamus has uncommon talent even if, 'Each recent
book by Heaney has made the previous book seem better' (W.Logan-Reputations
of the Tongue) ... I still haven't got over the million quid EMI gave to
that badly-in-need-of-a-haircut doggerel merchant whats'is'name. I
accidently wondered into a reading of his at Waterstones in Islington:
Audience three drippy PR's and a confused ESL student - all of whom clearly
thought rhyming 'jaguar' with 'the way you were' the acme of poetic wit and
and invention.
I have to say, as a no-good-never-been-any-good poet, I woudn't return Mr
Whitbread's cheque if a freak administrative cock-up sent it in my
direction. In fact I can easily see myself basking like a contented walrus
in the media spotlight, flinging half eaten and rather fishy stanza's at
whoever was stupid enough publish them.
