I had a letter (a circular) from John Harvey in the Autumn saying SD was
to close. This was put down to poor sales (and big returns) in bookshops,
and not receiving the hoped-for and required amount from the London Arts
Board. Sales of the crime books had been respectable, but the poetry very
low - despite the quality of the books, PBS Recommendations, Mat Caley's
great collection being shortlisted for the Forward etc. It's a great shame
if such a professional small press as Slow Dancer, with such high standards
both poetically and in production terms, and better marketing than most,
can't make ends meet. Casts a rather sad light on talk of poetry booms etc.
