I've come across the name of Hugh Sykes Davies a few times but have yet to
read his work beyond the selection in Robin Skelton's Penguin anthology of
30s poetry. I do have a copy of _Equofinality_ 2, ed. Rod Mengham & John
Wilkinson (Spring/Summer 1984), which has his poem, "The Scales of Disaster"
(which is simply three scales, listed in their degrees: the Beaufort scale,
the Richter scale, and lastly a scale for the magnitude of a nuclear war);
the bionote says: "HUGH SYKES DAVIES was the noted Surrealist who wrote
_Petron_ (1935) and later published the novels _Full Fathom Five_ and _The
Papers of Andrew Melmoth_. He died in June 1984; 'The Scales of Disaster'
is probably his last poem." Sorry not to have more information than
that. --N
