yes ... or 'yeh'? - and if you can admire, e.g. Roy Fisher, for the fact
that "he doesn't take any advantage of that climate", aren't you implicitly
recognising the existing fact of the climate / class system? Part of me
agrees that sticking the label "class" on economic and logistic conditions
is a very effective way of deflecting any consideration or criticism of
those conditions - but I also want to insist that "class" intrudes as well.
In the East Riding (and probably the North Riding as well) of Yorkshire, you
can be economically and logistically at the 'top' but you still won't be
recognised or entertained as one of the right "class" by the Lords
Lieutenant of either of those regions when the reigning monarch visits.
However close to the bottom of the economic chain those Lords might be, the
Chiefs Constable will turn out fleets of foot-police (or chopper police) to
surround you with ceremonial if you belong to the right class. And they
won't if you don't.
Don't forget how the Real IRA bombs made headlines for holding up London's
traffic, but the delays caused by the Queen Mother's parade on the same day
didn't rate a mention.
I know this isn't exactly on message for the list - but without the context
for anyone's writings being properly established, I don't see how the works
themselves can make sense.
