I think "not required to be" rather understates it. Years ago, when I came
up for interview as I approached the efficiency bar in my teaching career,
I was faced with the resonant question, "Do you find that writing poetry
interferes [sic] with your teaching?"
In terms of promotion in academe, this, insofar as it's based on
publications, is based on analytical rather than creative work. This seems
to be changing a little, but only a little.
