Call for Papers
Conference at the School of English and Drama
Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.
2-3 March 2001
Romanticism and Empirical Method
This conference will investigate the role of empiricism in the formation
of Romanticism. Recent scholarly endeavour has focussed largely on the
field of 'radical science'; this conference hopes to widen our
understanding of the impact of eighteenth century philosophical and
scientific thought. Particular emphasis will be placed on the
appropriation of empirical methods across newly-emerging bodies of
thought like the life and social sciences as well as poetics, aesthetics
and rhetoric. Submissions may also address physiology, physico-theology,
scientific methodology, and the Scottish enlightenment in the history of
Romantic thought. Interdisciplinary papers are welcome.
Conference convenors: Susie Jordan, Peter Howell, Gwee Li Sui and Prof.
Paul Hamilton. Contact Susie Jordan, 355 Jamaica Street, London E1 3HU,
e-mail us at [log in to unmask], or fax us on 08701443236. Deadline for
abstracts: 20 November 2000.
