John Wilson ~ Christopher North
(1785-1854)
A Conference to be held at The University of
Glasgow
Saturday 20 May 2000
John Wilson (1785-1854) is most widely known as Christopher North,
one of the key figures behind the early success and reputation of
Blackwood's Magazine. During his lifetime he was also a successful
'Lake' poet and minor novelist, as well as fulfilling his duties as Professor
of Moral Philosophy and Political Economy at the University of
Edinburgh. From the anarchic collaborations of 'Maga' through the years
of the subversive Noctes satires, Christopher North became a powerful
critic and a notorious figure in the 19th century literary world.
>From 1797-1802 Glasgow College, now the University, was Wilson's
home and where, under the influence of his teachers, he first began to
write poetry and criticism. The conference will focus on his life and work,
his literary and intellectual talents, his associations and friendships. It
will offer a rare opportunity to place John Wilson in context as poet,
satirist, critic and one of the vital figures of an emerging spirit of
romanticism in Scotland.
Papers should last approximately 20 minutes; anyone wishing to submit
