I had a student applying for Access Fund help last week who had a total of
£27 in charges for cash withdrawals in one month (HSBC bank). In some cases
two charges, totalling £2.50 were made on each withdrawal (withdrawals were
for £10 at a time)one from HSBC and one from the bank whose cash machine was
used.
I have referred the student in quesion to our Welfare Advisers who will take
his case up with the HSBC.

We have also noticed charges for use of cash till machines. The
amount involved are staggering. £1.00 to £1.50 a time. I can not
understand why banks charge for this facility on what are regarded
as 'student accounts'. This just adds to their difficulties. Many of
our students have to travel across town to avoid such charges. An
extra £1.00 or £1.50 towards the cost of Electricity or Gas makes
a difference if you are a student on a low income.
