Apologies to those on admin-grad who may have already
received this.
I would appreciate your assistance. I have been asked to
investigate the approval process of research degrees and
titles of research degree programmes. For instance do
you go through a formal approval process to establish a new
research degree by asking departments to set out aims,
objectives, resources available, staff expertise etc and
approve a specific title (PhD in Medieval Dentistry)?
Or do you permit departments to register students for the
award of PhD within the department without a specific
subject, but by ensuring, by some mechanism, that the
thesis topic can be supervised?
If the latter, what mechanism do you use? Are applications
approved within the department or by a faculty or
university research committee/selection panel?
Details of our procedures are below should you be
interested. Aspects of this are felt by some to be
irrelevant and there has been a query whether students
should be registered for specific degree titles.
I should be grateful for any information you could provide.
Many thanks,
Mary
At UKC we formally approve research degree titles through a
University level committee, proposals are submitted and are
required to address 16 points (these are the same for
taught as research degrees) which include:
award and title,
length and mode of registration,
entry requirements,
proposed annual intake,
programme management,
proposed start date,
evidence of opportunity and need,
aims and objectives,
curriculum content and organisation,
key skills,
assessment,
learning resources,
student support,
quality assurance and enhancement,
resource implications,
professional accreditation.
Students are registered for MPhil/PhD in a specific subject
by approval of the departmental Director of Graduate
Studies. Almost all students are registered for the MPhil
in the first instance and then subject to upgrading which
is conducted by a panel of 3 (supervisor, Director of
Graduate Studies and one other). Degrees are awarded as
'PhD in Chemistry'.
