I wonder if list members have seen the ad in the Library association's
Appointments circular for a Records Assistant at the National Trust's East
Midlands Regional Office, at the princely sum of £11640 - £13230. Duties
include "to assess historic archives, organise indexes, catalogue
collections of (largely) secondary source material, photographs and
suppliers information, and also to create a computer database of the
collections."
This sounds like a job which, at least for part of the time, needs
professional archives skills. Several points arise:
1. Why advertise with the LA when it is an archive post?
2. Why pay such an insulting salary? I bet they acknowledge, say, their
solicitors' skills at better rates.
3. Why make your sole archivist redundant and then advertise a job like this
soon after?
4. How come that the country's leading heritage body can be so ignorant of
such things?
Is this an issue the Society, BAC or someone should take up? I am not a
member of NT, but if list members are, perhaps individual complaints might
be of some effect.
