                                 Subject matter
One of the most important preservation
activities any library can be involved
in is to minimize as much as possible
the amount of damage caused by
staff and readers. This can only be
achieved by making people aware of
what the threats are to library
material and how they can contribute to
                                 extending its 'shelf-life'. This
session will demonstrate how to raise the
profile of preservation and how to
educate staff and readers in ways which
are appropriate to the type of library
you work in.

                                 Topics will include:

                                      the design and production of
notices
                                      drafting preservation guidelines
                                      different ways of educating staff
and readers.

The following issues will be covered in
relation to increasing preservation
                                 awareness:

                                      handling
                                      food and drink
                                      self-service photocopying
                                      houskeeping
                                      mutilation and defacement of
library material
                                      reading room supervision
                                      security
                                      inter-departmental co-operation
                                      emergency control planning.

Don't forget there is the opportunity
in the afternoon to have a tour of the
                                 Bodleian Library Exhibition Room, where
you will be able to ask questions
                                 about displaying library and archive
material; and a visit to the recently
                                 refurbished Duke Humfrey's Library.
