Despite the extensive involvement of both my present (Gloucestershire) and
former (Birmingham) offices in external funding, we have no experience of
sponsorship in the strict sense; that is the provision of funding by an
external body, usually commercial, in return for a benefit which is not
directly related to the supported activity. In my view, archive services
(except, perhaps, those with the most glamorous buildings and exhibition
facilities) have relatively little to offer sponsors. What is much more
common is financial support from external bodies in return for achievement
of a mutually desired objective. Thus in Birmingham we had funding from the
local hospitals trust for the selection and preservation of their archives,
and here in Gloucestershire we receive a regular sum from the diocese in
recognition of our status as the diocesan record office. These sort of
partnerships are open to most offices and will often represent a good way of
achieving desirable objectives.
