An article in last Friday's "Scotsman" newspaper about the digitised census
for 1891 for Scotland quotes Scottish Tourist officials : "Genealogy has
been identified by Scottish Tourism chiefs as an essential part of the long
term plan for the industry" and that this interest represents a key part of
the Scottish executives aim to increase US tourism by 5% by the year 2005.
It does not make clear what these projections are based on, nor what
research underlies the thinking.
However I do hope that it is the outcoem of some firm market research (if
there is such a thing!)

Subject: Genealogical tourism
Bruno Longmore's article in the April issue of the Journal referred to the
concept of 'genealogical tourism' having an increasingly important influence
in UK and Irish governernment circles. Has any research been made of this
subject, whether at national or local level?
Thanks
