ALAN WATKIN APPOINTED TO THE BOARD OF RESOURCE : THE COUNCIL FOR MUSEUMS
ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES
Alan Watkin, Chief Officer for Libraries, Leisure and Culture for Wrexham
County Borough Council, has been appointed to the Board of Resource : The
Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries, Culture Secretary Chris Smith
announced today. The appointment is for a term of three years and brings the
Board membership to fifteen including the Chairman, Lord Evans of Temple
Guiting.
Announcing the appointment Culture Secretary Chris Smith said:
" I am delighted that Alan Watkin has been appointed to the Board of
Resource. His breadth of experience and expertise in the arts and in the
libraries of Wales will be invaluable and I am sure he will play a key role
in developing the work of Resource."
Resource's Chairman Lord Evans commented:
"Alan Watkin brings valuable skills and knowledge to the Board and will also
provide an important Welsh perspective to our policy-making"
Biographical note
Alan Watkin is Chief Officer for Libraries, Leisure and Culture for Wrexham
County Council and was formerly Deputy Director for the Clwyd Library
Information Service. He is currently a member of the Library and Information
Service Council for Wales, the Welsh policy committee of the Community
Development Foundation, the Information Services National Training
Organisation (ISNTO) committee for Wales, the Enterprise Board of the
Library Association, the Welsh Books Council and the regional committee of
the Arts Council for Wales. He is also Chair of the European Public
Information Centre network group.
Alan Watkin has not undertaken any political activity in the last five
years.
Notes for Editors
1. Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries is the new name
for the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLAC), the strategic body
which replaced the Museums and Galleries Commission (MGC) and the Library
and Information Commission (LIC) on 3 April this year.
2. Alan Watkin joins Resource Board members Ajay Chowdhury, Dr Maurna
Crozier, Lord Evans, Victor Gray, Vivien Griffiths, Loyd Grossman, Nicholas
Hodgson, Mark Jones, Karen Knight, Neil MacGregor, Elizabeth Jane Ryder,
Michael Stevenson, Mark Wood and Professor Lola Young.
3. Lord Evans was appointed as Chair of Resource in August 1999. Four other
Board appointments were announced in January 2000. Resource will have a
maximum Board membership of 17, although the number may vary as
circumstances require.
4. Appointments to Resource are made by the Secretary of State for Culture,
Media and Sport.
