I also have a query about ISAD(G). The diagram illustrating the
relationships of fonds-subfonds-series-files on p36 (appendix A-1) shows
files emanating directly from fonds, as well as from series.
Shouldn't all files be contained in some sort of series, however artificial
- even if we are talking about just one file?

No, you aren't. Although I think I can see see why the Canadians adopted
this approach in this particular example, it certainly is a common mistake
to take the terms sub-fonds, series etc simply as equivalent to descending
levels. However, it is more usual to see the mistake of the level beneath
a fonds being termed a sub-fonds regardless of its relationship to the
level above.
