Feel I should probably comment........

As secretary of the Society of Archivist's in Scotland I do not think that the
situation is entirely full of doom and gloom. Most of our meetings are well
attended, often with numbers exceeding 30-35. We try to cater for everybody and
always hold at least one meeting a year on a Saturday. Those meetings held on
weekdays will often include training sessions to give people added impetus to
attend. Being part of such large geographical area it is not uncommon to find
members catching 6.30am trains to make it on time for 10am meetings (well done
the crowd from Inverness and Aberdeen). Far from finding our members apathetic I
would consider us to have an extremely lively membership with active training
and publicity committees. The introduction of the points system for registration
has also meant that a lot of newly qualified archivists are prepared to get
involved.

Yes there are always going to be people who will find reasons not to attend or
to get involved and yes I still stuff envelopes for people who I've yet to
speak to on the phone let alone meet ( and this is after almost 3 years) but on
the whole I feel people do make an effort and are appreciative of the work that
people put into the society.

At this point there is probably no harm in mentioning that the next Scottish
meeting is on 28 October at the Bank of Scotland HQ in Edinburgh - hope to see
as many of you there as is possible, especially after me saying how good we are
up here in Scotland.

Regards

Aoife Martin

Subject: Regional meetings

To add to the debate on regional meetings, should we also be considering their
timing?

East Midlands meetings are always held on a Saturday afternoon. Quite apart
from the fact that when the journey to some of our further flung offices is
taken into account, attending a meeting can sometimes eat up a whole day of our
precious weekends, this timing means that those members who have regular
Saturday commitments are never able to attend - however much we 'pep up' the
content! Varying the meeting time might help to vary (or even add to?) the
'handful of loyal stalwarts' who attend.

I've heard of one region where meetings are held on Saturdays, weekday evenings
and during office ours in rotation, with the express intention of allowing
different groups of people to attend. Is this rumour correct? Does it work? Do
other regions do this?

Just a thought .....

Lynda
