This week, the attached advertisement for a Digital Preservation
Co-ordinator at the British Library will appear in 'The Guardian'
(28/8 & 2/9/2000) and 'The Times Higher Educational Supplement'
(1/9/2000) and in the BL's Office Notice.
The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and
one of the world's greatest research libraries. We are seeking an
innovative and highly motivated person to help the Library as it
embraces the digital age.
The British Library has an ambitious Digital Library Programme,
ranging from collaborative digitisation projects to addressing the
implications of the voluntary legal deposit of electronic material.
The Library is about to implement a Digital Library System, which will
provide the infrastructure for maintaining and archiving the
electronic component of the national published archive.
A new post is being created to help develop and co-ordinate the
growing strands of activity in the preservation of digital material in
the Library. In the first instance, the post will focus mainly on the
preservation elements of the Digital Library System implementation.
Based within Collection Management, the postholder will work
with many parts of the organisation, and collaborate with external
research projects and comparable institutions. The post will ideally
be located in London, but an appointment in Boston Spa might be
possible.
It is an extremely interesting time in this area, as practice tests
the theories of digital preservation. The post represents the
opportunity to make a significant contribution to this unresolved
subject.
As this is an emerging field, it is not anticipated that the
successful candidate will have any stereotypical background. An
understanding of information systems, library skills (especially life
cycle collection management), experience in digital preservation and
an understanding of the philosophy of preservation would be the ideal
combination.
