Dear All,
May I just add my two penn'orth at this point.
I agree with what Simon has to say about this list and I think that half of
the problem with the list is the fact that the function many of the
subscribers want it to serve is not compatible with the function Mailbase
wants it to serve.
In my opinion, the list should act as a central forum for all archivists,
records managers, conservators and what have you, whatever the topic, be it
patron saints, the last entrants to the Archivists Ball (my entry is: And
last but not least the coolest archivist in the world - the Fonds) or more
professional subjects such as modern electronic records.
According to the emails from Brenda Weedon and Dick Sargeant, Mailbase do
not like us mentioning anything other than serious, professional topics
which is, to some extent, fair enough since they're paying for all this.
Ideally a listserv should be set up which would allow us to post what we
like to it. [No, this is not an offer to do it - perhaps the Society of
Archivists could look into setting one up] But I think until it happens or
Mailbase lightens up and gets a sense of humour we should be grateful we
have a listserv at all and stick to the rules.
