Helen -
When I was still at Tyne and Wear Archives, we brought in a map shwing the
entire Electricity Distribution network for North Esat England (Tweed to
Tees form memory. This had been in the Electricity Company Office in
Newcastle, Wall mounted on a winding mechanism so that the engineers could
crank it round to view the section required.
We did send a photograph of it to the SoA newsletter at the time. My
recollection was that the plan was about 40 feet long and about 20 wide. We
ended up separating it into 3 sections, so that we could produce it if
necessary.

Subject: size matters-maps
We have in our holdings a huge map. It was originally commissioned by
Worcester City Corporation in 1866.
Unfortunately the city only specified the scale and not the dimensions; so
the surveyor supplied a map measures 8 metres (25 feet) square. The map is
rarely displayed because of its size, we certainly can't show it in the
Record Office searchroom.
Does anyone know of one that's bigger?
