Public Record Office - Kew
Access to Archives Programme

The Access to Archives programme is a new initiative which will establish
electronic access to the archives of England by making catalogues of local
and central records of a national or regional significance available on the
World Wide Web within two years. The Programme is run by a partnership of
the PRO, British Library and Historical Manuscripts Commission It has a
steering group which contains representatives of those bodies, plus the
National Council on Archives, the Society of Archivists, ACALG and archives
of science.

Under the programme catalogues from local and national record offices will
undergo retroconversion. They will then be loaded onto a central server and
made available over the world wide web as a coherent whole. Electronic or
paper copies of the catalogues will be returned to the contributing archive
offices. The central operation – overall control, editorial supervision,
enforcement of standards, management of the retroconversion programme,
development of the web site and search engine - will be housed at the PRO
and funded by the Treasury. The cost of retroconversion of local catalogues
will be funded locally mainly through applications to the Heritage Lottery
Fund from consortia of record offices.

We are seeking three highly motivated professionals to join our Access to
Archives team keen to make a contribution to the overall success of the
Programme. The posts are offered on a Fixed Term Appointment basis to the
end of March 2002. The posts may be extended or made permanent as
determined by the PRO. Applications for secondments are also welcome.
