Thanks to all who have replied. What you have written confirms what I have
thought for some time that such an object was made by casting on a section
at a time. I will pass on what you have written to Ray Pearson.
Just a few comments on your messages
Sariel : The King James version of Kings 1 says the bowl was "one
handsbreadth" thick. I reckon that at 100mm - perhaps more suitable for such
a huge bowl than 20mm with the inherent weaknesses of the joining. On the
other ahnd it would reduce the weight by more thana bit. Of course this
could be a translation error.
Michael : The detailed description in the Old Testament is difficult to
interpret as other than a huge casting. Where things have been covered with,
for example, gold (presumably leaf) it says so. Your comment serves to
remind us of the immense wealth of Israel in King Solomon's times.
Alan and Mark : Do these sections look as though they were added by making a
suitable mould at the point where the section was needed (like mending a
bell) or by sectioning off a large mould?
Mark : I have presumed that "filled" was meant to be "filed"
