Can anyone help with any biographical details of Mark Raffel, who
was sent on an inspection of the King's mines of lead and iron near
Llantrisant, Glamorgan, in 1532. He was accompanied by
Christopher Morris, gunner, later master gunner, to Henry VIII, and
offered advice on mining techniques, recognition of silver-bearing
lead ores, silver extraction and on the blowing of the bloomeries.
One source claims Raffel was Italian - but I haven't found any
corroboration of this.
Has anyone come across this gentleman elswhere?
With thanks
Tim
