SENIOR STATISTICIAN
The MRC Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) designs and conducts trials and
meta-analyses in a number of different disease areas. The main emphasis of
the current research programme is multi-centre randomised controlled trials
and meta-analyses combined with related methodological research. In addition
to the established Cancer and HIV Divisions the Division Without Portfolio
(DWP) has been set up to undertake trials in other disease areas where there
is no existing trials infrastructure or tradition of trials.
A collaboration has been established between the DWP and the Arthritis
Research Campaign and British Society for Rheumatology to support clinical
trials in arthritis and rheumatism. We are seeking to appoint a Senior
Statistician to work with the Head of the DWP to develop this area. The
post-holder will work with scientists from the CTU and with clinicians in
developing research proposals and in undertaking studies from the initial
concept through to the final report.
We are looking for an individual with a postgraduate qualification in
statistics, preferably a PhD, and several years experience in clinical
trials or epidemiology. He/she should have a strong interest in working in
close collaboration with clinicians and other scientists; good communication
skills are therefore essential. The post-holder would also be expected to
have an active interest in developing methodological research either on
their own or in collaboration with other members of the Unit.
The appointment, which will be for 5 years in the first instance, will be in
either MRC salary band 2 (in the range £29,362-£45,000) or band 3 (in the
range
£25,197-£36,982), depending on qualifications and experience, plus Location
Allowance of £2,400. Relocation expenses may be available. It is anticipated
that an honorary appointment will be made in the appropriate department of
the Royal Free and University College Medical School and with the Arthritis
Research Campaign in the University of Manchester.
