Hi John,
There is a large literature on palaeo reconstructions on a whole host of
recontruction methods. I come from a background in palaeolimnology
where a great deal of work has been done to allow us to reconstruct past
environments (e.g. pH, total phosphoorus, air temperature, salinity
etc.), from a range of biological indicators preserved in sediments.
A lot of the work in calibration has been done by people such as Cajo
ter Braak, John Birks and Steve Juggins (amongst others).
Seeing as the literature is so wide ranging I will suggest a couple of
references that you could get to start you off.
Birks, H.J.B., 1995. Quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.
161-254 in D.Maddy & J.S. Brew [eds.] statistical modelling of
quaternary science data. Quaternary Research Association, Technical
Guide 5. Cambridge University Press.
This is a wonderful review by John Birks or pretty much every technique
used in palaeo calibration work, and is probably the best starting point
for learning about the various methods and generating a literature
source that I have yet read.
A more technical paper but which compares a range of methods (and so has
a good list of references, and I happen to have it sat by my computer)
is:
ter Braak, C.J.F., 1995. Non-linear methods for multivariate
statistical calibration and their use in palaeoecology: a comparison of
inverse (k-nearest neighbours, partial least squares and weighted
averaging partial least squares) and classical approaches. Chemometrics
and Intelligent Laboratory Systems 28:165-180.
Hope this helps
