The Health and Safety Executive is seeking to recruit a temporary statistical officer to join their Epidemiology and Medical Statistics Unit, for a 6 month period.
The Health and Safety Executive's mission is to ensure that the risks to people's health and safety from work activities are properly controlled. In particular, an important aim of HSE is a reduction in the prevalence and incidence of ill health caused or made worse by workplace risk factors. HSE's Epidemiology and Medical Statistical Unit (EMSU) carries out epidemiological investigations of workplace risk factors and attempts to utilise new and existing data sources to quantify the extent and distribution of occupational ill health in Great Britain. EMSU comprises a senior medical employment adviser, a senior scientific officer, 11 statistical staff and 14 administrative staff. The information gathered feeds into HSE policy development including the provision of information to government ministers, advises HSE inspectorates in support of field work, and informs other health and safety professionals and members of the public.
This temporary post is required to play a key role in a project to update the proportion of cancers attributable to occupational causes. The post holder will also assist in the identification, quantification and assessment of distribution of selected work-related exposures and provide general statistical support.
You must have an honours degree with statistical content or equivalent qualifications or experience. You will need good IT skills and an ability to communicate statistical findings to non-statisticians. Knowledge of epidemiological methods would be an advantage.
The appointment will be on the Band 5 salary range £14,500-£22,107.
(placement on this scale will depend on qualifications and experience)
