Post-doctoral research assistant
'Modelling transport and deposition of air pollutants in Europe' a
collaborative project between CEH, Edinburgh, The University of
Glasgow and EMEP, Oslo.
RA1A £16,775-£18,731
This project, funded by the UK DETR, will develop UK research on
deposition of air pollutants for application at a European scale within
the Co-operative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the
Long-range transmission of Air pollutants in Europe (EMEP).
The successful applicant will develop computer code, within the
EMEP 50km Eulerian long range pollutant transport model, for a
new module to estimate dry (gaseous) deposition of sulphur,
reduced and oxidised nitrogen and ozone to vegetation over Europe.
Analysing data from monitoring sites throughout Europe to identify
and explain spatial-temporal patterns will link to comparisons of
EMEP model output with results from several national air pollution
models and with trends in monitoring data. Statistical adcances in
analysis of complex mathematical models will be used to define
procedures for quantifying sensitivies and uncertainties in EMEP
model predictions.
Applicants should jhave a background in a scientific disciplline with
a strong mathematical content, an understanding of statistical
principles with an awareness of Bayesian methods, some
experience of data analysis and an interest in mathematical
modelling. You will work in a multi-disciplinary team including
meteorologists, plant physiologists and modellers and have an
interest in environmental policy issues.
The post is for a fixed term of 30 months starting from January 1,
2001 or as soon as possible therafter. The successful applicant will
be employed by Glasgow University, but will be based in the UK at
the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (Edinburgh) and will spend a
substantial time with EMEP at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute
in Oslo.
