Health in Early Old Age
Abstract
During 1937-39 Sir John Boyd Orr conducted a survey of childhood health and
nutrition in Britian. Colleagues in Bristol have traced the subjects of the 1937-39
study, who now are in their early orld age, to their present locations. The Economic
and Social Research Council enabled some 300 of those traced to be interviewed in
their homes. Full household, residential and occupational histories were obtained,
together with a range of subjective and objective measures of health.
The International Centre for Health and Society presentation will summarise some to
the results from this study. The life course accumulation of disadvantage will be
demonstrated. The accumulated hazards of domestic labour and paid employment in
the different phases of life will be described in relation to different objective
measures of health in early old age.
David Blane has a background in both clinical medicine and social science and a long
standing research interest in inequality and the social determinants of health.
