Hi,
I've just been warned of a virus that is making the rounds. Normally I would
not write to the list about a virus as there are too many for it to be
worthwhile. However, this virus appears to have been forwarded by the Royal
Statistical Society to addresses in their address book and so it is likely to be
have been sent to many members of Allstat. Also, it gives me an opportunity to
re-iterate good practice with regard to viruses and Allstat.
The virus is contained in an attachment and is descibed below. With this and
all other viruses, please note the following:
* Viruses cannot be spread via a plain text e-mail.
* A virus in an attachment will only cause problems if that attachment is
executed, or in the case of a Word macro virus if that document is opened in
Word. It is therefore advisable to check all attachments with a virus scanner
before executing or editing them. Some mail programs will automatically
execute attachments when an e-mail is opened; if your e-mail program has this
option, it is a sensible precaution to disable it.
* For these and other reasons, DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS TO ALLSTAT.
* If you are worried about a virus alert, either consult a Virus Information
Web site such as
http://www.datafellows.com/virus-info/
http://www.icsa.net/html/communities/antivirus/index.shtml
or contact the list owner.
PLEASE DON'T WRITE DIRECTLY TO ALLSTAT ABOUT IT.
Regards,
John

Information about the "LoveLetter" virus:
The message that it sends will be something like this:
Subject: ILOVEYOU
Body: kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me.
Attachment: LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs
It will probably seem to be sent from someone you know.
Make sure that you don't open the attachment in the mail. As mentioned above,
make sure that your mailer does not automatically open/execute attachments.
Further information about the virus is avaiable at
