New Senior Posts within ALSPAC
ALSPAC (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children) is a
multidisciplinary study designed in particular to assess the extent to wh=
ich
the physical, psychological and psychosocial environment interacts with t=
he
genotype to affect the phenotype either positively or negatively. A full
description may be found on the study web-site
(http://www.ich.bristol.ac.uk/alspac.html).
There is an ambitious programme of data collection, with a wide variety o=
f
collaborators and study scientists involved in different projects and
programmes. It is based at, and receives the full support of, the
University of Bristol.
The study now intends to make three major appointments in recognition of =
the
importance of developing the resource both nationally and internationally.
You will be expected to be able to work with scientists in a variety of
different disciplines, to facilitate the work of others, to have good
management skills and have an excellent research record. You will be on =
an
equal footing with the study=92s director of biological sample collection=
s and
the business manager. Posts will be on the research fellow/senior resear=
ch
fellow grade and contracts will be for five years in the first instance.
Candidates of appropriate distinction will be recommended for Professoria=
l
status. Understanding of the role which epidemiology could play in the
future of genetic research would be a distinct advantage.
The three postholders will be expected between them to cover a variety of
disciplines =96 and between them will share responsibility for physical h=
ealth
and development, mental health, cognitive development and neurobiology an=
d
for up-to-date and innovative methods of statistical analysis which will
take account of the longitudinal and complex nature of the data collected.
You will be responsible to the Study Director and will be expected to lea=
d
one of the programmes of research as well as liaise with all the other he=
ads
of relevant collaborative programmes. You will also be expected to write
grant proposals to support a particular programme of data collection and
research, and will be expected to publish widely in your own field as wel=
l
as facilitate collaborations.
You should have extensive research experience. A medical background may =
be
useful although not essential. Experience in organising fieldwork for la=
rge
or small surveys would be an advantage.
This exciting study is expected to support an expanding series of studies=
at
the cutting edge of epidemiological research. Potential candidates are
invited to contact Professor Jean Golding, the Scientific & Executive
Director of ALSPAC for further information.
Salaries will be on the research fellow/senior research fellow scale
(=A323,256-=A339,718) for non-clinical post-holders and =A348,905-=A363,6=
40 for
clinically qualified appointees.
