Two Institutes in the School of Advanced Study (University of London)
introduced non-returnable deposits for Master's degrees last year - with
mixed and inconclusive results!
Such are the financial constraints that no less than 13 students applying to
the Institute of Latin American Studies forfeited their £100 deposit. That
indicates a lot of people who were "genuinely committed" (certainly putting
their money where their mouth was) but who, for what was given in all cases
as financial reasons, in the event had to withdraw.

Subject: Postgraduate fees
At St Mary's we are trying to combat the problem of students who
accept an offer of a place on a masters programme but who
subsequently do not turn up. It has been suggested that we
charge a non-refundable deposit. Does anyone else do this? I
would be grateful for any information on other institutions' practice.
Many thanks
