Hello, is it possible to have something added to the next mail out please? It would be as follows.

Many thanks,
Hannah

Recommendations of conferences / events
I am looking for conferences / events in the UK to attend in 2019. I work in community engagement / audience development / family learning at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. I'm really keen to find things to attend to develop my work in this area, if anyone can recommend any, or places to look for them? Many thanks in advance.

Email is always the best way to contact me. On Mondays I usually work at the Laing Art Gallery (telephone 0191 278 1611). The rest of the week I am at the Shipley.

Thanks for drawing our attention to the Crusoe anniversary.

If anyone wants to look at islands their meanings, their culture, their representations I¹d be very interested. I wrote a book about the time I spent on Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific and have written a great deal about islands. I also live a large part of the year on one (not the UK one).

So if anyone wants to explore islands, please do get in touch.

Very warmest for 2019

Subject: Feedback cards - thanks for the helpful advice / A 'Friday'
question

Dear GEM

Many thanks to all who have contributed advice regarding our overhaul of feedback cards - I will happily collate and post early next week.

As it is Friday, may I post a question about Robinson Crusoe? It is 300 years this year since the first publication of Daniel Defoe¹s novel in which we encounter FridayŠis anyone in GEM land doing any work / exhibition / event around this anniversary?

We are paying passing homage on the 20 January when we undertake a search for J G Ballard¹s ŒConcrete Island¹ in which his near future Crusoe crashes a Jaguar on the A40M Westway http://www.museumofwalking.org.uk/events/ballard-under-the-westway/ We are going to be discussing the Ballard novel, as well as motorway heritage (who doesn¹t love concrete and road demonstrations), but we also feel it would be nice to fly the Daniel Defoe flag too. Hence my question as we would be happy to publicise your efforts when our event runs.

Love to know if this is an anniversary that will be marked or may be overlooked in GEM landŠŠ

BTW I found out that Defoe would have been the least likely person to use the term ³Girl Friday², he apparently was an enthusiastic supporter of women¹s education.

Best for the weekend, Andrew

Afternoon everyone in GEMland,

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and have started the New Year full of enthusiasm.

I have a favour to ask anyone who is involved in a museum with either sporting or military collections:

We're creating some learning resources on behalf of the Army Museums Ogilby Trust & Sporting Heritage. Before working on the resources, we want to find out what you are currently offering, what you are able to offer and what you would like to offer. This will help us create a resource that works for you and that you will find useful.

If you could find ten minutes (surveymonkey's estimation) to answer ten questions for us, we'd really appreciate it:
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QVCMQPW. Please feel free to forward it on to anyone you think might have something useful to contribute.

Thank you very much and good luck with the rest of the week.

And a Happy New Year to you too Essex!

I'd be interested to know as well because I'm working with a library in Sheffield helping them with a HLF bid and putting together relevant activities – any local examples or contacts could potentially get involved in the project..

Many thanks
