Hello Toni,

We've done loads of work with SEN pupils from very small children to 6th form students. We've always just used our existing resources and handling collections. It is more the way that you use them and teach the topic, etc. rather than having specific objects. Your objects might need more careful handling and supervision and your risk assessment may require tweaking. The SEN school or class will have vast amounts of dedicated SEN resources, they probably want something different (more everyday) from you.

In terms of activities we've done most British history periods from stone age (apologies) to 1960s, with lots of dressing up (hats are always useful), handling objects, etc. Also done lots of textiles (braiding, sewing, applique (gluing), weaving) and printmaking including screen-printing, poly-printing, mono-printing. All using the resources we'd use with mainstream classes.

I would try to meet any class beforehand if you can - spend some time in their classroom, if you haven't already.

Hope this helps a little.

Subject: Handling Collection for SEN pupils

Hi all,

I am setting up a specific handling collection for use with SEN pupils. I was wondering if other museums offer handling collection sessions specifically for SEN pupils and what kind of activities places offer, beyond the simple 'handling' of objects.

Many thanks
