Hello everyone.
It seems that a lot of what is written around tourism seems to boil down to
the following two statements (please note tongue firmly in cheek):
1. Why I (as a relatively wealthy, enlightened academic) should be able to
go to visit as many ethically-sound destinations as I can to provide
two-way cultural stimultaion and appropriate development; and
2. Why everyone else (especially the less-enlightened) should be prevented
from doing so as they cause immense destruction, misery and unhappiness.
Whatever the ins and outs of tourism, as far as I can see there are several
hundred better ways of helping ease world inequalities and safeguarding
global and local environments than transporting loads of white Northerners
around the world. Perhaps as there are so many refugees willing to risk
their lives to come the other way, we could arrange a permanent swap. Then,
I'm sure we would all have a much more worthwhile and educational cultural
experience, and help solve some global income distribution problems...
David.
