An important problem is correct use of units of measurement. I proposed
a facility to specify and check units of measurement of variables in
2004, but it was not adopted. Resistance to the proposal has increased
continuously since that time, for reasons nobody will state. I was
ultimately denied permission to publish the proposal as a non-binding
ISO Technical Specification.
Programming by contract is helpful, but it cannot help if there is
nothing to assert. For example, if the units of a dummy argument are
supposed to be kilometers but the units of the actual argument are
meters (or feet), the processor cannot detect this.
People have claimed this can be done using derived types, but nobody
does so because of the labor cost and performance degradation.
