The 2019 International Conference on Romanticism in Manchester welcomes proposals for papers or complete panels related to the theme, “Romanticism Now and Then.” The conference will take place on July 31-August 2, 2019 at the Friends’ Meeting House in Manchester city centre. Marking the 200th anniversary of Peterloo, the conference theme is intended to accommodate a wide range of papers engaged with shaping anew our understanding of the politics, aesthetics, and/or temporalities of Romanticism. Deadline for proposals: January 15, 2019.
Keynote speakers: Marlene Daut (Carter G. Woodson Institute, University of Virginia) and Anne-Lise François (Comparative Literature, University of California, Berkeley).
A plenary panel on the 200thanniversary of Peterloo will include Catherine Hall (History, University College London), James Chandler (English, University of Chicago), and Robert Poole (History, Central Lancashire).
A pre-conference day (July 30) of “cultural encounters” will entail a series of guided tours of museums and libraries focused on Romantic objects and sites, and a post-conference “nature encounter” (August 3) will lead delegates to the Peak District to ascend Mam Tor (a site of significance in Blake’s Jerusalem).
Finally, to help make the conference welcoming, newcomers’ dinners will be arranged for July 30th. Anyone interested in connecting with other delegates on arrival can sign up to join one of these dinners, each led by a more seasoned Romanticist.
