In February 2015, I initiated a collaborative work involving 14 WAN members. The details are listed below. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their support.
“I can only meditate when I am walking. When I stop, I cease to think; my mind only works with my legs”
Jean- Jacques Rousseau, 1768
For many walking not only fulfils a physical requirement, but also satisfies a spiritual need to live in the moment. ‘Mark of Effort ‘ is a collaborative venture culminating in a display of 400 images.
In February 2015 an open call was advertised on the Walking Artist Network, requesting assistance with a proposal. The 15 artists that responded are located around the UK, with one artist based in Newfoundland, Canada. Each participant was sent a colour, 27 exposure disposable camera, together with a stamped address envelope and a guidance and information sheet.
Their task was to go on a solitary walk, and whilst walking to take photographs of what ‘Mark of Effort’ meant to them. Once they had completed the exercise, the cameras were posted back for processing together with particulars of each walk. This gave details of location, date and time of walk, length and duration of walk and the weather. In addition each artist was asked to write what ‘Mark of Effort’ meant to them, and why did they go on solitary walks?
Every image exhibited represents their individual interpretation of ‘Mark of Effort’. The sound that accompanies this work is the artists’ responses to these questions.
This is the first of a number of creative works envisaged following the completion of this thought provoking series of journeys, raising the question of whether a feeling or emotion can be truly captured by imagery.
