G'day Dietmar
Sorry for the delay, and the brevity, but I'm on the move.

A considerable number of 'digital stone age' (?) references are in my
original 1988 dataveillance paper, at:
http://www.rogerclarke.com/DV/CACM88.html#Refs
I'd definitely look at James Rule's and Gary Marx's early works. Although
some of their work was sociological / intellectual in nature, they both
conducted empirical research and referred to empirical studies by others.
See also the older references in my 1993 Profiling paper:
http://www.rogerclarke.com/DV/PaperProfiling.html#Refs
And in my 1994 data matching paper:
http://www.rogerclarke.com/DV/MatchIntro.html#Refs
There may also be some relevant refs in a current manuscript on big data:
http://www.rogerclarke.com/EC/BDQF.html#Refs
(Sorry about the self-promotion, but when you're searching for tracks back
into history, you have to look at the references in greybeards' papers!).
Regards ... Roger
