Cognitive Impairment in NFL Players
Is Associated with the Age They Started Playing:
What the Study Says or Doesn't Say

Professional football players who began playing tackle football prior to
age 12 were significantly more likely to experience later-life cognitive
impairment as measured by neuropsychological tests than an age-matched
cohort of players who began playing at age 12 or later. That was the
finding from an analysis based on retrospective self-reports by retired
professional players about their age of first exposure to football.
.
The report, which appeared in the Jan. 28 online edition of Neurology,
suggests that incurring repeated head impacts (RHIs) during a critical
neurodevelopmental period may increase the risk of later-life cognitive
impairment.
.
But the study's lead author and three experts who reviewed the paper for
Neurology Today agreed that the findings raise at least as many questions
as they answer, and that much more needs to be learned about a host of
variables that affect brain development and influence later-life cognitive
impairment.
.
While all commentators who spoke with Neurology Today said the study lends
credence to caution about allowing young children to play tackle football,
they also pointed out that the risks need to be weighed against the
benefits children derive from participating in team athletics. They agreed
that longitudinal studies following child athletes over time are needed.
