Applicantion are invited for a PhD Studentship in the area of urban systems modelling. The aim
of the work is to create a new geneation of urban modelling tools (focusing on transport, land
use and energy) and associated platform technologies that are accessible, useable, composable
and playable by individual citizens and which can contribute to processes of bottom up policy
innovation, development and analysis. The work will be supervised jointly by Professor John

The Studentship will be funded by the Grantham Institute and the Natural Environment
Research Council. The studentship will cover home/EU student fees and provide a bursary to
support living expenses for three and a half years together with a budget for travel and
consumables. The Studentship is open to persons with settled status in the UK and to UK/EU
nationals who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the 3 years prior to start of the
studentship in October 2015. Exceptionally, overseas candidates who would be able to pay the
difference between home and overseas fees may also be considered.
Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree or
equivalent in a relevant highly quantitative subject (e.g., engineering, mathematics, statistics,
natural sciences, economics) together with strong software and programming skills. Applicants
should also have an interest in cities, planning and decision support processes, and the
analysis of interactions between human and technological systems. A Masters degree in a
relevant subject is also desirable.
