Happy here too, Doug. I guess on of the simplest distinctions is between the
transactional use of language in normal mode - where the intent is to convey
a message from A to B, such as 'can you lend me a fiver?' or 'my head hurts
because of that brick you just hit me with' or 'the Daleks have just won the
election', and the medium of poetry, where language is the material. And
conducting transactions with itself. Poetry communicates rhythms, images,
echoes, intangibles, the peripheral vision of the mind etc. It's not to deny
poetry can't communicate a simple, unambiguous message, but certainly to
disavow the necessity of it so doing.
