Dear Ken
Sorry for my late reply.
In my paper "Discussions and movements in design research" I discuss basic research in design research (page 20 -21) where I go through some possible positions.
https://journals.hioa.no/index.php/formakademisk/article/view/137/134
"Basic Research involves in the search for general principles" (Friedman, K. (1999, September). Useful and Critical, the Position of Research in Design.)
Additional description of basic research would be that basic research is about that which is not applied. It is often domain-centric and serves a domains internal knowledge production, only eventually after some time and through steps leading to application. It is pure in the sense that it is its own purpose. Knowledge is its purpose.
In the paper I argue for a view that the design experiment can play a role similar to basic research in other fields.
In the paper I use my own installation work with Natasha Barrett as an example, though it is not so very good because the dissemination and reflection on these experiments is underdeveloped. But to me these where experiments about different representations of space. We sought to generate new ways, maybe general principles for the articulation of space.
I also use my dissertation as an example where digital creativity was explored for its own sake with less emphasis on application. It was a very narrow and specialized investigation.
I think my conception of basic research is standard. The questionable thing I do is to suggest that the design experiment can play the role of basic research in design-driven inquiries or research by design. Silly of me to take this for granted.
All the best
