Do we still need curators?
Annick Bureaud
In 1996, Bureaud completed a survey for the French Ministry of Culture on "Curating, Displaying
and Exhibiting works of electronic arts". At the time it seemed that the Internet would allow
artists to by-pass curators and traditional cultural institutions. After much debate in online
mailing lists and forums, the issue now seems less "black & white". In the huge and noisy
space of the Internet new artist-lead "cultural institutions" have emerged. Who are the "new"
curators? What is their role ? Do we still need curators?
New Media Arts: Momentum and Critical Mass.
Peter Ride
Are there distinctly new forms of arts curation and management that are being necessitated
and demonstrated by new media practice? This illustrated talk will explore the ways of working
that organisations and artists are developing that are appropriate to the contexts and
opportunities of new technology. Sometimes this means moving away from conventional
model of exhibition/performance and presentation towards a process based, or even
research-structured activity. The behaviour of organisations is changing as they increasingly
operate as agencies and team co-ordinators. The traditional role of the curator is declining in
relevance and a role as ‘creative producer’ or ‘facilitator’ is increasing. Peter Ride is the Artistic
Director of DA2, Digital Arts Development Agency, an organisation that develops commissions,
artist residencies and curatorial training schemes. Previously he was the Arts Programme
co-ordinator for Artec, the Arts Technology Centre, London (1995-7), and Director of Cambridge
Darkroom Gallery (1992-5).
The Crossing Arts Talk Series events take place in the Portland Hall, University of
Westminster Regent Campus,16 Little Titchfield Street, London W1, unless alternative venues
are listed.
