Some years ago, when I was an exceedingly young and rather cheeky
curate in central London, I was serving the Bishop of Tristan da Cunha
at Mass. As I handed him his mitre, I had the audacity to say (I blush
now for shame), "Here's your titfer, My Lord."
[titfer is Cockney rhyming slang for "hat": "tit for tat"]
His Lordship had clearly never heard the word before, and asked me to
repeat it, taking careful note of it. I fear it is now the accepted
liturgical term for a bishop's headgear in Tristan da Cunha.
Oriens.
