medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Christopher, it appears from the description of the image that the rescue of
Maurus is one of several scenes from S Denis illustrating Gregory's Life of
St. Benedict. It would be interesting to know whether the windows were made
before or after Suger's conversion to a more strict observance of the Rule.
Also, I would venture to say that, as a standalone image, the rescue of
Placid is one of the most common illustrations of the Life of S. Benedict
from many times and locations.
best,
John W.
