Those who have been watching on television the USAmerican presentation
of the current Winter Olympics may have noticed in the "Alpine"
panoramas a tall, dark building rising in splendid isolation from a
mountain top. Accompanied in this presentation's voiceover by a
reference to "castles", this is in fact a monastery of medieval origin,
dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel and called the Sacra (Sagra) di
San Michele. Its location is actually subalpine, on Monte Pirchiriano
in the Val di Susa west of Turin.
