medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear John,
When the Chartres Tree of Jesse and its companion windows, the Infancy of Christ
and the Passion of Christ, were made, c.1145-55, there was no need to look at them
from the floor of the cathedral. The new western block built onto Fulbert's 11th-
century church in the early 12th century included a first-floor chapel, as in the
slightly earlier west block that Abbot Suger had built onto the Carolingian basilica of
Saint-Denis. When the cathedral was rebuilt after the disastrous 1194 fire, this first-
floor chapel was suppressed, so that *now* one has to look at these windows from
the floor of the cathedral. They are, thus, not as visible as originally intended. I'd
recommend good binoculars, or a telescope to get good detail.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
